UNIQUE CELL-OPENING CAPABILITY
A very special surfactant is needed to open a highly crosslinked rigid polyurethane foam. Niax silicone L-6164 is a nonhydrolyzable silicone copolymer developed especially for that purpose. Open-celled rigid foams can generally be used for low- or non-thermal conductivity applications like void filling, or for structural use in items ranging from entry doors to picnic coolers. It is typically compatible and nonreactive with commercial isocyanates used by the rigid foam industry; therefore, it may be particularly suitable for 1K/OCF foam prepolymers.
Niax silicone L-6164 is a uniquely homogeneous, hydrolytically stable liquid surfactant that controls the balance between initial cell stabilization and final cell opening.
This unique cell-opening capability can be used to resolve dimensional stability issues caused by the unbalanced cell-gas diffusion that can happen in water-blown formulations. It's even typically successful at cell opening in overpacked conditions.
Niax silicone L-6164 demonstrated a broad response curve between open-cell content and use level, which means that open-cell content can typically be controlled by use level. It also gives excellent foam flowability and density distribution performance without any significant loss in physical properties. This can allow the user to manage cell opening in a rigid foam in order to control the dimensional stability issues common to water-blown foam. In 1K/OCF applications, used in combination with a silicone stabilizer, it typically provides good-frothing nonsagging foams, while the cell opening allows for foam's improved dimensional stability and accelerated moisture curing in the foam core.
